Motorhome Navigation: Why Height, Weight & Length Matter
Anyone who has ever sat in a motorhome in front of a bridge that's too low, or in an alley that keeps getting narrower, knows that sinking feeling. The reason is almost always the same: the navigation you're using doesn't know your vehicle's dimensions.

The big map apps are built for cars. They calculate the fastest route – without checking whether your vehicle is too tall, heavy, long or wide to drive it. A 3.1 m underpass, a 3.5-tonne weight limit or a narrow route through a village simply don't show up in the routing. Irrelevant for a car – but a real problem for a 3.20 m tall motorhome.
These four dimensions really count
- Height: bridges, tunnels, underpasses, barriers, gates at campsites. The most common and most expensive mistake.
- Weight: many bridges and roads are limited to 3.5 tonnes or less – especially in rural areas.
- Length: tight hairpin bends, small roundabouts and turning spots. Especially critical with a trailer/caravan.
- Width: narrow bridges, tree-lined avenues and roads through villages – this is where it gets tight for wide motorhomes.

Practical tips
- Measure your vehicle including everything on top (roof air conditioning, satellite dish, bikes on the roof) – the last few centimetres are what count.

- Don't rely on the sat nav blindly: keep an eye on the road signs anyway – they always take priority.
- Factor in the last few metres to the pitch: some access roads are narrow or unpaved.
