Motorhome Tolls in Europe: France, Italy, Austria & More

Updated on 15 August 2026 · Muvano

Tolls are a noticeable cost on trips across Europe — and for motorhomes they're often more complicated than for a car, especially above 3.5 tonnes. Here's an overview of the most important countries (no guarantee — prices and rules change).

Two systems: vignette vs. distance-based toll

Vignette = a flat fee for a period of time (e.g. 10 days, 2 months, 1 year), regardless of how far you drive. Distance-based toll = you pay per stretch of motorway you drive (toll stations). Some countries mix the two.

The 3.5-tonne jump — costly and easily missed

Many motorhomes sit just below or just above 3.5 tonnes. It's right at this threshold that it gets expensive: in several countries (Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia) going over 3.5 tonnes moves you from the cheap vignette system to the pricey distance-based one with its own box. Check your vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating — not its current loaded weight.

Avoiding or budgeting for tolls

If you have time rather than money, you can steer clear of toll roads — often more scenic, but slower. In Muvano you can (with Muvano Plus) deliberately avoid toll roads, and the route is planned around péage & co. Alternatively, budget the tolls in deliberately and buy vignettes in good time (often online in advance).

Check before you set off

With a little preparation, tolls stay predictable. Plan your European route with Muvano — including vehicle dimensions and optional toll avoidance.
