Travelling with a Dog in a Motorhome: Tips for Stress-Free Trips
For many of us the dog is simply part of the family. In a motorhome it's the perfect companion – as long as a few things are right. Here are the most important tips for stress-free travelling as a group of three (or four).
Safe while driving
A dog counts as "cargo" and must be secured – with a travel crate, a dog guard or a safety harness attached to a seatbelt. This protects both the dog and the passengers if you have to brake hard. Never leave your dog alone in a hot motorhome – in summer it heats up dangerously fast.
Breaks & exercise
- Plan regular breaks for toilet stops and a run-around.
- Keep water within reach at all times, especially in summer.
- Choose rest areas and car parks with a bit of green space.
Finding dog-friendly pitches
Dogs aren't allowed or welcome everywhere. In Muvano you can tag and find pitches marked "dogs allowed" – so you know in advance where your four-legged friend can come along (community info, by campers for campers).
Heading abroad
For trips to other EU countries your dog needs an EU pet passport, a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. Some countries have special rules (e.g. tapeworm treatment, lead or muzzle requirements). Check the countries you're heading to before you set off.
