Low-Emission Zones in Europe: What Motorhome Drivers Need to Know
More and more European cities have low-emission zones — and they apply to motorhomes too. Without the right sticker you risk hefty fines. Here's an overview of the most important countries.
Germany: the emission sticker
Many German city centres are green low-emission zones — entry only with a green sticker on the windscreen. The sticker is a cheap, one-off purchase (available at registration offices, TÜV/DEKRA and elsewhere). It applies to foreign vehicles too.
France: Crit’Air
In many French cities (Paris, Lyon, Grenoble …) you need the Crit’Air vignette — a sticker that rates your vehicle by emissions class. Order it online in advance (the official site) and it arrives by post. Without one you risk fines, sometimes on the spot during checks.
Italy: ZTL — don't confuse it with a low-emission zone
Italy's ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) are restricted-traffic zones in old town centres — often monitored only by camera, with no barrier. Driving in = an expensive fine, motorhomes included. No sticker helps here; you have to go around the zones and park outside them.
Other countries
- Belgium (Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent): LEZ with online registration beforehand.
- The Netherlands, Spain, the UK and others also have low-emission zones with their own rules.
How to avoid trouble
